Building up your credit profile is important if you want to take out personal loans and home loans in the future. And you can start doing this by applying for a credit card.
Credit cards can supply a relatively simple way of developing a credit history, providing you use your credit cards wisely. If you misuse your credit cards, you will end up damaging your credit history, not improving it.
If you want to apply for a credit card, consider the following:
- What do you want to use your credit card for? Everyday purchases? One off purchases?
- How much can you afford to pay off and how quickly?
- Do you really need reward programs? Will they benefit you?
If you think you are ready to take on the responsibility of a credit card - and make no mistake, it is a big responsibility - there are factors that the bank will take into consideration.
These include:
- How long you have been in your job and your current salary. This varies from bank to bank.
- If you have a previous credit history and if you do, how is it currently standing?
- You require a number of documents handy to complete your application. This also varies from bank to bank.
Once you have decided how you want to use your credit card, there are a number of features that could be of use to you. Depending on how you intend to use your credit card, compare the credit card features and establish the ones most beneficial to you. Banks often offer:
- Interest free credit cards.
- No annual fee credit cards.
- Low rate credit cards.
- Reward program Credit Cards.
These features vary from credit card to credit card. Be sure to do plenty of credit card comparisons to find the best credit card for you.
If you are knocked back for a credit card, don't despair. Wait a while and try applying again. If you apply to too many banks in a short period of time, you will look desperate and these enquiries will show up on your credit file. If you aren't given the credit limit you were hoping for, this isn't a big deal. If you handle your credit card wisely, many banks will offer credit card limit increases after some time has passed.
Compare credit cards and find the best credit cards that will benefit you as your first credit card.
