No annual fee credit cards can help infrequent users

14 May 2008

Credit cards with no annual fee are not particularly common, but there are a few such credit cards on the market. They are only potentially good value for very infrequent users of credit cards, however, as a lack of interest free days coupled with high interest rates will usually mean any purchases quickly rise in cost. For those who only make purchases with credit cards several times per year and can pay off the entire balance immediately, credit cards with no annual fee should be good value.

The St. George No Annual Fee card is excellent value in a no annual fee credit card. Offering a reasonable interest rate of 17.75% p.a. for purchases and cash advances, it also allows for an additional credit card at no extra cost. It would be wise to be careful with allowing another user, though, as it makes it far more likely that a purchase will be made without your knowledge that will begin to accrue interest.

The Commonwealth Bank No Annual Fee Card does not offer as low a rate on purchases or cash advances that the St. George card does, however it does provide a low interest balance transfer period at 5.99% for 5 months. It also offers an additional card, but unlike most credit cards, it is only available to Commonwealth Bank customers.

Remember, if you frequently need to use a credit card, even if you always repay it immediately, you will likely be better off with a premium credit card that allows you to take advantage of reward points.
