Students and credit cards
25 June 2008
Students with credit cards are becoming increasing common in Australia - but can they afford them? With the cost of living going up all the time, many students are turning to credit cards to help them afford everyday items. Any they're ending up in debt because of it.
University timetables rarely offer the flexibility to work permanent fulltime jobs. And part-time and casual jobs don't always cover the bills. Many students think that applying for credit cards is the answer - but when students repeatedly can't make the repayments, they earn themselves a bad credit history. This can cause them trouble later on when they want to get loans.
However some banks do offer credit cards designed with students in mind. There are credit cards with low fees, or interest free days, or low interest that might be within the budget of a student. These credit cards might also come in handy for a low income earner.
If you're a student and think you need a credit card, please take a look at our Credit Cards Features page and our Compare Credit Cards page to find credit cards that suit your needs.
