What is on your Credit File?
Thursday March 5, 2009
The sort of information kept on a credit file can be quite basic such as your name, what institution you applied with and when, the limit amount and the reason behind the card. These credit files are usually kept on credit card holders who have had an active card in the last seven years and record information for both companies and businesses in addition to general records.
Credit files are generally defined as being for the purpose of identifying the cardholder for official reasons and provide further identification proof of your personal details and business or financial history. However, under no circumstances is a credit card provider allowed to view the files of an individual without their specific permission.
Credit files can prove very handy for individuals who will soon be applying for large loan as it provides evidence of your credit history, and if you have good credit then this highly beneficial. In fact, it is advisable to check your credit file every year as this is what financial institutions will assess your financial viability on and you need to ensure that all information is correct.
There are credit reference agencies and they should provide you with a copy of your credit file within ten business days of your request at no charge. When checking details cover everything from full name to driver's licence number to the credit provider you most recently applied to. Additionally, try to check all financial recordings within your credit file to the best of your knowledge which covers any credit applications you've made, overdue payments, bankruptcy and court details and any serious credit infringements.
This information on your credit file will not stay permanently on your file but will be updated and deleted after five years for credit applications and defaults with serious credit infringements and bankruptcies deleted after seven years.
