E-tax 2009: changes for the new tax time
10 July 2009
Due to recent legislative changes and additional enhancements, there have been a number of changes to the e-tax system for 2009 including changes to the e-tax software itself and the verification process.
Additionally, there a have been changes made to the pre-filling service which is available which include several major avenues of the tax lodgement process.
Changes to pre-filling in 2009 include:
- private health insurance rebate details
- pay as you go (PAYG) income tax instalment amounts
- rental property address details from 2007-08 rental property schedules
- family tax benefit (FTB) claim status information is now separate as FTB claims are no longer administrated by the Tax Office
- an enhanced Alerts service through which individuals receive an alert by email
- letter reminders of work related expenses and any requirements to lodge a schedule of work related expenses (SWE)
The Family Tax Benefit changes would be the most significant for most people as in the 2008 Federal Budget removed the option of claiming family tax benefit (FTB) payments through the tax system. As a result, as of 1 July 2009 the Australian Taxation Office would not accept any FTB claims, including current and prior year claims with claims redirected to the Family Assistance Office (FAO) to claim FTB for the year 1 July 2008 to 30 June 2009 and future years.
