Australian credit cards resist green changes

Monday August 3, 2009

Globally credit cards providers have been employing green techniques to lessen the impact of credit cards on our environment with a great response from many credit customers. However, Australian credit cards are resisting the switch, despite the fact that with over 14 million personal credit cards in Australia the impact would be significant.

Experts on the industry believe that card providers are hesitant to switch due to the cost of the initial change and consumers have not reach demanding level yet, allowing them to wait until a later date to change their credit cards practices.

Some of the green practices that have been introduced overseas include:

Recycling old credit cards

Like mobile phones and all paper products, credit cards can be recycled, and with over 14 million on the Australian market that equals a lot of landfill. What's more, credit cards are now able to be made from PETG plastic, a biodegradable option. Virgin Money announced that it will soon begin producing credit cards made from biodegradable materials and MECU is one of only a few credit cards providers using PETG plastic.

Using email credit cards statements for all customers

Online statements have been introduced by Australian banks, but for credit cards statements they are still resorting to paper. From a green perspective, this is a fairly redundant option as the majority of credit customers are contactable on an email address. Overseas paper statements are still available, but on request from the customer. Additionally, email statements are easily stored and can be accessed anywhere around the world.

By not using paper statements, credit card providers will actually save themselves money for the cost of post and save energy costs of paper production.

Green rewards

Very popular overseas, this program allows customers to opt for their rewards to be redeemed for carbon offsetting, funding renewable green power development even supporting green companies and initiatives such as recycled milk carton furniture and compost systems.
